I am concerned that in the age of eHow, wiki, evidence-based, best practice and performance management, some readers may interpret this article as a blueprint to raise productive children. It is not. Children are dynamic and unique individuals.
As such this article is about me sharing my experience. Although I cherish my children’s academic achievements and winning international awards for various science and innovation competitions, I love them unconditionally. Needless to say, my children are not geniuses. I just wish to see them happy and healthy, embracing Islam fully. Below are just some of the steps I have taken in raising them:

Gratitude! At the mention of this word, all of us think of many incidents in our life where we have been grateful to someone for their help or even their presence in our life. Gratitude is one of the main factors in the life of a Muslim. Islam speaks highly of practising gratitude. Gratitude to Allah (glorified and exalted be He) holds high in its pedestal. There are simple things we can do to show our gratitude to our Creator for all that He has given us and continues to give us. Subhan Allah!

When you have a problem in life, there is a symptom that shows up – a weakness of yours. If you go to a doctor for headache, it can be because of a minor stress, or it may be a symptom of a much more grave health problem. A good doctor will properly diagnose before giving any medicine. This applies to our life as well. Many times we cover up or overlook the real issue and are looking for a quick-fix or ‘tablet’ for motivation. This doesn’t work, at least not in the long term!

We have the opportunity for high stations of Jannah – to meet the Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him), to meet the blessed companions (May Alah be pleased with them all), and most of all to see Allah, The Most High! It sounds amazing, doesn’t it? Yet still many of us choose to not strive for Jannah. We have sadly become distracted and absorbed by this dunya, and lost sight of our purpose – worshipping Allah – and our main goal – the pleasure of Allah and subsequently Jannah

It is important to note that we must remain patient even if our advice is to someone clearly choosing to go down the wrong path. Our Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) had relatives who did not accept Islam, yet he was the most profound example of being patient and intended for positive discourse even if the behavior of his relatives was frustrating/grieving to him. It is critical for us to always stick to our deen and to abstain from judging anyone through it – some discussions may not have one answer so we should remain humble as Shaykh Yasir Qadhi once said that ‘Allah might forgive someone for their ignorance and punish the other person for their arrogance.’ Our Prophet (Peace and blessings be upon him) gave his full attention in conversations, and spoke succinctly, beautifully, and gently.

If you have been trying to save up for something, or if you have debt that you haven’t been able to repay, or if you have a goal that you just haven’t been able to achieve; as a productive Muslim you should set aside a portion of your salary every month for sadaqah – even if it’s a very small amount. The difference it will make in your life will be worth it insha’ Allah.
